Women with genetic risk for breast cancer have a number of steps they can take to reduce their risk.
There are a number of steps women can take to reduce their risk of developing breast cancer during their lifetime.
Lifestyle changes are the first line of defense toward reducing breast cancer risk. Those changes include maintaining a healthy weight, getting regular exercise, limiting alcohol (3 drinks or fewer per week is generally recommended), eating healthful, nutritious food, and avoiding or quitting smoking.
Frequent monitoring and surveillance is also employed for women who are at higher risk for breast cancer. Although surveillance cannot prevent cancer from developing, it can help with early detection, which means that the cancer can often be caught before it has grown and spread. A surveillance program may require screening via MRI, mammogram, or ultrasound every 6 months.
There are also hormonal therapy treatments that can be used to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. Drugs such as Tamoxifen, Evista, Aromasin, and Arimidex can help decrease the potential for developing a specific type of cancer known as estrogen-receptive breast cancer.
High-risk women may also consider a risk-reducing mastectomy and other surgical procedures in order to prevent breast cancer from occurring.
