Medical tattooing can be used in conjunction with surgical nipple and areola reconstruction or on its own.
Nipple and areola tattooing can give the breast a more natural appearance through additional pigmentation.
Medical tattooing is a specialized form of tattooing that adds pigment to the skin. Nipple and areola tattooing is used in two instances. The first is when a woman has a nipple and areola reconstruction, in which these elements of the breast are rebuilt using her own tissue. Although the nipple and areola will look and feel natural, they will not have the darkened pigmentation that a woman’s original nipple and areola would have. Nipple and areola tattooing is used to add that pigmentation, making the reconstructed nipple and areola look much more realistic.
Additionally, nipple and areola tattooing can also be used for women who choose not to have surgical nipple and areola reconstruction. In this setting, tattooing not only adds pigmentation, but through the use of shadowing techniques, it can also help create the appearance of a 3-dimensional nipple and areola on flat skin.
Nipple and areola tattooing is covered by insurance in most cases when it is done as a part of breast reconstruction.
Medical tattooing occurs after all major surgeries are complete. In the case of nipple and areola reconstruction, tattooing usually happens at least 8 weeks later.
