In some cases, a woman’s nipple and areola are removed during mastectomy.
If the nipple and areola cannot be preserved, nipple and areola reconstruction can restore these elements to the breast and can even be performed years after the original reconstruction.
In this procedure a patient’s own tissue is used to construct a new nipple. Medical tattooing can then be incorporated to add pigmentation to give the new nipple and areola a more natural look.
A reconstructed nipple and areola will not experience any sensation and will not be able to produce milk or be used for breastfeeding. However, many women feel that their reconstruction is complete once their nipples and areolas have been rebuilt.
Nipple and areola reconstruction is generally covered by insurance if the procedure is part of breast reconstruction.
It can be done as soon as 3 to 4 months after your initial reconstruction, after the new breast has had time to heal.
